How these penny-pinchers retired in their 30s

How these penny-pinchers retired in their 30s

Eschewing consumer culture, Pete Adeney, also known as Mr. Money Mustache, practices an extreme frugality that allowed him to retire at age 30. Avoiding car use, DIYing and investing in stock market index funds are among the tactics he and his fellow F.I.R.E. (Financial Independence Retire Early) devotees espouse. Paul Solman reports from Colorado in this installment of “Making Sense.”

Bill Gates Breaks Down 6 Moments

Bill Gates Breaks Down 6 Moments From His Life | WIRED

Bill Gates reflects on six important moments from his life and career, from teaching students to program in high school to his relationships with Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett, and Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, who passed away on October 15. This video was recorded on August 31, prior to Mr. Allen’s passing, and had previously been scheduled for release this week. Bill Gates and WIRED dedicate this video to him. Bill Gates released the following statement about his friend and colleague on October 15: “I am heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends, Paul Allen. From our early days together at Lakeside School, through our partnership in the creation of Microsoft, to some of our joint philanthropic projects over the years, Paul was a true partner and dear friend. Personal computing would not have existed without him. “But Paul wasn’t content with starting one company. He channeled his intellect and compassion into a second act focused on improving people’s lives and strengthening communities in Seattle and around the world. He was fond of saying, ‘If it has the potential to do good, then we should do it.’ That’s the kind of person he was. “Paul loved life and those around him, and we all cherished him in return. He deserved much more time, but his contributions to the world of technology and philanthropy will live on for generations to come. I will miss him tremendously.” --Bill Gates, Co-Founder of Microsoft and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Ray Dalio's Lessons From The Financial Crisis | CNBC

Ray Dalio's Lessons From The Financial Crisis | CNBC

Summary:

For the tenth anniversary of the 2008 financial crisis, Ray Dalio, one of the world's most successful investors and entrepreneurs, wrote A Template for Understanding Big Debt Crises in which he shares his unique template for how debt crises work and principles for dealing with them well. This template allowed his firm, Bridgewater Associates, to anticipate events and produce significant positive returns while others lost badly.

Ray Dalio

In 1975, Ray Dalio founded Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Over forty years later, Bridgewater has grown into the largest hedge fund in the world and the fifth most important private company in the United States according to Fortune magazine, and Dalio himself has been named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along the way Dalio discovered unique principles that have led to his and Bridgewater’s unique success. It is these principles, and not anything special about Dalio, that he believes are the reason behind whatever success he has had. He is now at a stage in his life that he wants to pass them along to others to do whatever they think is appropriate to do with them.

What they don't teach you about career fulfillment in school | Ryan Clements

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is missing in our curriculum these days? Isn't there more to creating a life, than finding a job? Ryan’s passion is empowering others to find fulfilling work, and living their “inner greatness”. He is the author of the book Unsuited: How We Can Reject Conventional Career Advice And Find Empowerment, and in addition to his diverse entrepreneurial pursuits, Ryan also consults to an international company that builds customized educational and training solutions for a variety of organizations, across a wide range of industries. He has also worked, in a consulting and business coaching capacity, with a number of start-ups, and continues to serve as mentor to them. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
