Learn the reasons why Michelle did it, what she learned about herself, consumerism and why we spend. Unconventional Ways to Save Money | Kerry Taylor | TEDxChathamKent

Moving from the big city to a rural organic farm transformed how I think about personal finance and money. With a reduced income, no fancy stores, and limited access to services like garbage pickup, my lifestyle and relationship with money changed. I started Squawkfox in 2008 as a financially fun newsletter for friends and have since been voted Canada’s Top Money Blogger by The Globe and Mail readership. Much of my traffic is from the United States, but I have readers around the world. I currently live in Toronto, Ontario where I just moved from an organic farm in rural British Columbia. I’ve also called Vancouver and Ottawa home. Carl is my husband. Chloe is my 2 year old daughter. Pivo is my dog. Our family budget is awesome.

The High Price of Materialism

More at http://www.newdream.org Video by New Dream Psychologist Tim Kasser discusses how America's culture of consumerism undermines our well-being. When people buy into the ever-present marketing messages that "the good life" is "the goods life," they not only use up Earth's limited resources, but they are less happy and less inclined toward helping others. The animation both lays out the problems of excess materialism and points toward solutions that promise a healthier, more just, and more sustainable life. Materialism is dying: Stuart Grover at TEDxManly

Stu Grover is a technologist and entrepreneur. Whilst sitting in a post grad class at the International Space University in early 2012 Stu Grover was first introduced to the idea that replacement parts could be "printed" on demand in Zero G. As a technologist and entrepreneur this concept fascinated him and he simply had to find out more. Two years on he is the owner and founder of 3D Printing Studios which is a network of high street shops setup to increase awareness of 3D Printing amongst everyday people. Stu sees a future in which 3D Printing is as much a part of our lives as computers are today but not quite so intimate. What a well-off couple learned

from cutting consumer habits

A software engineer and professional fundraiser in Boston decided four years ago to purge some of their consumerist habits to save more than 70 percent of their salaries. The result was a big move to rural Vermont and the release this month of the book, “Meet the Frugalwoods: Achieving Financial Independence Through Simple Living.” NewsHour Weekend’s Christopher Booker reports.

Consumer Culture: The Day Your Baby's Wardrobe Became Better Than Yours

The way we consume clothes and many other products today creates too many casualties and too few winners. Nonetheless, we have embraced the buy-and-throw-away society for years, as sustainable consumption was perceived by many as inconvenient and expensive. However, critical consumers and daring entrepreneurs have paved the way for a new consumption model, Sustainability 2.0: sustainable consumption without compromise. Vigga Svensson has managed to offer sustainable products that are easier, cheaper and of better quality than their less sustainable counterparts, in the most wasteful industry around: textiles. Vigga Svensson is a prominent entrepreneur, who has spent the last 12 years on developing business models that foster sustainable consumption. Vigga has a firm belief that sustainability no longer entails compromises on price and quality, and is dedicating her career to spreading this message across the world.

How stores track your shopping behavior

| Ray Burke

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why are companies so intent on using technology to track our behavior? Our actions reveal what we desire, how we shop, and why we buy. Retailers can now learn so much more about shopper behavior than ever before, and while these “big data” applications create concerns about privacy, the detailed data can be used to design stores, product offerings and promotions that connect with our interests, speed up the shopping process, and help us find items we will buy. These new tools are critical to improving store efficiency and shoppability; and offer a vision of the future of retailing. Raymond R. Burke (Bloomington, IN USA) is the E.W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and founding director of the School’s Customer Interface Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for investigating how customers interact with new retail environments and technologies. His research focuses on understanding the influence of point-of-purchase factors–including new products, product packaging, pricing, promotions, assortments, and displays–on consumer shopping behavior. Dr. Burke has served on the faculties of the Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. His articles have appeared in several major journals, including the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing, and Marketing Science. Whereas hard work was once seen as the route to prosperity in the US, nowadays the best most people can hope for is a lottery win. Three generations of farmers in Vermont ring the changes of the past fifty years. Doug Lyford remembers that his parents never argued about money: "There were five of us and we all went to college. No farmer could afford that any more". Disenchanted with the mainstream politicians, who have not done enough to help them, many are turning to the traditionalist Tea Party. For others, such as bicycle shop manager Anthony Laskaris, hard times are only to be expected: "this is the effect of globalisation: our living standards go down a little, so that others' can rise". Best Documentary of the Housing Market Crash (of 2018?) | Inside the Meltdown

| Behind the Big Short

MELTDOWN - The Men Who Crashed The World - 2018 The first of a four-part investigation into a world of greed and recklessness that led to financial collapse. In the first episode of Meltdown, we hear about four men who brought down the global economy: a billionaire mortgage-seller who fooled millions; a high-rolling banker with a fatal weakness; a ferocious Wall Street predator; and the power behind the throne. The crash of September 2008 brought the largest bankruptcies in world history, pushing more than 30 million people into unemployment and bringing many countries to the edge of insolvency. Wall Street turned back the clock to 1929. But how did it all go so wrong?Lack of government regulation; easy lending in the US housing market meant anyone could qualify for a home loan with no government regulations in place. Also, London was competing with New York as the banking capital of the world. Gordon Brown, the British finance minister at the time, introduced 'light touch regulation' - giving bankers a free hand in the marketplace. All this, and with key players making the wrong financial decisions, saw the world's biggest financial collapse. Control Your Financial Outcome - Grant Cardone

If it’s important, have a target. Church of Cardone welcomes comments but the fact is most people can’t handle the truth. People don’t have targets on money because they believe they can’t control the outcome of their finances. If you want money you must have targets & measure your success in target attainment. I started doing this when I was broke. Each day I would look at what I had & try to improve it just a little each day. If you don’t give money attention you won’t have money The easy way to see what you’ve quit on is to see what you no longer have targets on. If you’ve quit on something you need to know it so you can re-engage. You have targets on everything you are still pursuing. Those things you don’t believe you can change you no longer measure Be sure to have your target set on being at this years http://10XGrowthCon.com ---- ►Where to follow and listen to Uncle G: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/grantcardone Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/grantcardonefan SnapChat: https://www.snapchat.com/add/grantcar....
